She was the midwife of Middletown and also delivered over two thousand babies throughout her lifetime in "New Marlborough" which would later be known as Marlboro, Vermont.
Elizabeth had knowledge of general nursing and also the ability to use medicinal herbs. It was recorded by her family that she never lost a mother or child in any of her assisted baby deliveries.
She is said to have been taught by a visitor to her girlhood home who "had traveled extensively in the Orient and had a considerable amount of eastern medical knowledge". Elizabeth also had a second cousin, Elizur Hale, who had studied medicine and surgery, and who practiced near Middleton at Glastonbury, Connecticut.
