Elizabeth was a daughter of Abigail Miller and Ebenezer Hale.

She married (1) Captain Francis Whitmore 15 November 1750 at Middletown, Connecticut.

She was the midwife of Middletown and also delivered over two thousand babies throughout her lifetime in "New Marlborough" which would later be known as Marlboro, Vermont.

Elizabeth had knowledge of general nursing and also the ability to use medicinal herbs. It was recorded by her family that she never lost a mother or child in any of her assisted baby deliveries.

She is said to have been taught by a visitor to her girlhood home who "had traveled extensively in the Orient and had a considerable amount of eastern medical knowledge". Elizabeth also had a second cousin, Elizur Hale, who had studied medicine and surgery, and who practiced near Middleton at Glastonbury, Connecticut.

Mother of Samuel, born at Middletown 26 December 1751, died at Meridian Parish in Wallingford Township 5 November 1754; Samuel, born 9 November 1754 at Wallingford Township, died an infant; Philena born 8 November 1755 at Wallingford Township; William born at Meridian Parish 5 January 1759, died 4 February 1763 at Middletown; Sabra born 11 July 1769 at New Marlborough Township, Vermont.

After the death of Francis Whitmore, Elizabeth married (2) Issac Pratt 11 October 1798 at Marlboro, Windham, Vermont.

She is buried alongside her first husband, Captain Francis Whitmore, in West Marlboro's Old Hogback Burying Yard. At her death, she was still known as "The Widow Whitmore".
