She was the paternal grandchild of Alsey Austin & Druscilla Tomlinson of Clayton; and the maternal grandchild of James Mitchiner/Mitchener and Eliza Wilma Rand of Johnston County.
Her mother died in 1875 when she was 15 years old, and her father married (2nd) to his wife's younger sister, Lenora "Nora" Mitchener, by whom 2 more children were born.
Dora married her 1st cousin, Victor C. Austin, on October 12, 1881 when she was 20 years old, and he 43 year old.
The couple farmed in Upper Clayton and would be parents to 9 known children: Clifford (c. 1882), Ernest (c. 1883), Sophia Emma (1886-1974), Myrtie (c. 1887), Herbert (c. 1890), Pearl (c. 1891), Ralph (c. 1894), Agnes (c. 1897) and Veta (c. 1892).
Dora was widowed in 1927 when her husband of 46 years passed at age 70. She survived 11 years, passing in 1938 at age 77.
