Emma May Griggs, 84, Native of Area, Passes
Emma May Griggs, a lifetime resident of the Crabtree-Scio communities passed away July 5th at 2 a.m. at the Mary Ellen Nursing Home in Lebanon at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 17 days.
She was born May 18, 1868 to the late Jim and Linda [Malinda] Compton at Scio, near the Richardson Gap Community. At the age of 14 she joined the Baptist church at Providence.
In 1888 she was married to Henry Kinzer of Crabtree, who passed away in 1919. To this union, three sons, Ray, Jim and Cleo were born. Mrs. Kinzer later married Charley Griggs of Salem, Oregon in 1922. He preceded her in death in 1933.
In 1944 she became a member of the Crabtree Christian Church and was also a member of the Evening Star Grange at Crabtree.
Mrs. Griggs is survived by her three sons, Roy Kinzer, Lebanon; Jim and Cleo Kinzer, both of Brookings, Oregon; two stepsons, Clyde and Harold Griggs of Portland and two stepdaughters, Helen of Salem and Edna of Portland. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, July 8th at the Huston Funeral Home in Lebanon with Rev. Ivan Cordell, past of the First Christian Church of Lebanon officiating and Mrs. Virginia McKinney as vocalist accompanied by Mrs. Joel C. Booth at the organ. Interment was in Franklin Butte cemetery near Scio with Don Kennedy, Lee Jones, Arch and Lloyd Miller, John Sumpter and Larry Gorman serving as pall bearers.
