A memorial service for Robert Warren Russell , 79, Ogdensburg, will be at a later date at First Congregational Church with the Rev. Walter F. Smith officiating.

Mr. Russell died Saturday at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home, where he was under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.

Arrangements are with Fox-McLellan Funeral Home.

Mr. Russell began working as a nurse at St. Lawrence State Hospital, now St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, and then was head nurse for 15 years. During that time, he served as president of the Civil Service Employees Association. In the 1960s, he joined the Society of the United Helpers as administrator of its nursing home on outer State Street. He was chief executive officer at the society and worked with many community leaders in building the United Helpers into a major health care provider in St. Lawrence County. He retired in 1990.

Born July 10, 1928, in Ogdensburg, son of Leslie E. and Anna Gilmour Russell, he spent summers at his grandparents' farm in Morristown and at the family camp on the St. Lawrence River.

He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1946 and, after attending Cortland State Teachers College, graduated from St. Lawrence State Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. He was a member of the 1946 Northern League Men's Basketball Championship team. He earned his bachelor of science degree in 1976.

A marriage to Sally C. Ierlan ended in divorce. He married Patricia Bateman Edghill on Dec. 27, 1986, in the Stone Church. She died Nov. 13, 2004.

Mr. Russell served on the Ogdensburg City Council for one term. After retiring, he served on the board of the St. Lawrence County Solid Waste Development Authority and also served as interim director of the Jack and Jill Day Care Center and as a volunteer for the former A. Barton Hepburn Hospital, now Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center.

A lifelong sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as bowling and weekly card games.

He was a member of the Cranberry Lake Fish and Game Club and later the Nine-Mile Hunting Club. He was a member of the Rotarians and earned the Legion of Honor from Kiwanis International.

Surviving are a son and his wife, three daughters and their husbands, a sister and her husband, 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A son, Leslie B., died as an infant.
