Mr. Douglas E. Marshall, 74, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 8, 2007. He passed away quietly, surrounded by his family, at his home on Crossingham Road. Mr. Marshall was born on January 31, 1933, in Carroll County, Virginia, to Enoch Marshall and Esther Alderman Marshall, who preceded him in death. Mr. Marshall was a loving and beloved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Priscilla Nixon Marshall; his four sons and three daughters-in-law, Greg and Lori Marshall, Steve and Laura Marshall, Eric and Julie Marshall, all of Mount Airy, and Chad Marshall of Wilmington; his six grandchildren, Tyler, Ben William, Cara, and Robert Marshall, all of Mount Airy; and Derek Amburn of Jonesville; his four step-grandchildren, Nathan, Natalie, and Jessica Ratermann and Emily Evans, all of Mount Airy; along with his sister, Brenda Golden of Mount Airy; and nephew and spouse, Buddy and Colleen Golden of North Dakota. He was a faithful member of Salem United Methodist Church, having served as Lay Leader for many years along with teaching Sunday school and being involved with many other church activities. Mr. Marshall was also a former member and past president of the Mount Airy Lions Club and Travelers Protective Agency. He served in the U.S. Army and retired after working nearly 50 years with Spencer's Incorporated. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Monday, September 10, 2007. Funeral services will be conducted by the Reverend Dennis W. "Bud" Cameron and Dr. Steve Rainey at Salem United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 11, 2007. Burial with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436 will follow in Salem cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Salem Methodist Cemetery Fund, c/o Clinton Gravley, 354 Hay Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family wishes to express their sincerest thanks to Mountain Valley Hospice, Surry Friends of Seniors, and all the loving caregivers, including Darwin Brightbill, Lisa Bingman, Misty Smith, Mildred Marshall and Joyce Cassell, that helped Mr. Marshall and his family during his long fight with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS).
