Allen O. Gartman died April 19, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center, following a brief illness.
Eighty-seven years ago on February 9, 1922, Allen Otto Schwitzer was the sixth child born to Otto Kossuth and Ella Margarita Boettcher Schwitzer in rural Bennett, Iowa. After his mother's death during childbirth, at the age of three months Allen was lovingly adopted by his paternal aunt, Amanda and her husband George Gartman. He grew up on the Gartman farm near Elwood, Iowa.
Al's entire education was at the Elwood Consolidated School, graduating in 1939. After graduation he began his farming career with his father.
On September 12, 1943, Al married Doris Jeanne Bowman in Maquoketa, Iowa. To that marriage three daughters were born. Jeanne died in 1972. On November 15, 1975, he married Shirley Heister. Al increased his family when he adopted Shirley's son Marc.
Al enlisted in the Army in September of 1943 and served over 2 years during WWII. After training in the Army, Al qualified for entrance into the Army Air Corp. He served with the Mighty Eighth Air Force, 34th Bomb Group, as a tail gunner flying B-17s and B-24s. As a Sgt. stationed in England, Al flew 18 bombing missions over Germany with his flight crew known as "Mike's Missionaries."
Upon his discharge, Al returned to farming with his father west of Maquoketa. Over the next 40 years, he farmed near Clinton and then south of Maquoketa, also selling seed corn for a number of years. He retired in 1984. In his retirement he enjoyed golf, bowling, playing cards and the Chicago Cubs. He was a member of the Lions, the American Legion, and was a board member of the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa Country Club, and the Maquoketa Plan and Zone.
Al is survived by his wife Shirley; two daughters, Julie Scott, Davenport, Jane Wilkins, Iowa City and son Marc and Rachel Gartman of Appleton, Wisconsin; a brother, Clarence of Maquoketa, and sister Alice Bond of Silvis, Illinois. There are eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jeanne, a daughter Barbara, three sisters, and three brothers.
