Womble, III, and wife Debbie of Raleigh; son Robert B. Womble and wife Lynn of Raleigh; daughter Elizabeth W. Kodrzycki and husband Bob of Summerville, SC; six grandchildren, Cameron, George M. IV, Robert, and Margaret of Raleigh and Roger and Allie of Summerville, SC; and four great-grandchildren. While an infant she moved with her family to Portsmouth, Virginia where she attended grammar school in Craddock and high school in Churchland. After graduating from Churchland High with honors, she attended St Mary's College and UNC at Chapel Hill where she majored in accounting. Upon her marriage she moved to Denver, Colorado to join her husband who was then serving in the US Army Air Corps. Upon his discharge they moved to Washington, D.C and then to Wake Forest, NC where they lived while he attended Wake Forest College Law School. Upon his graduation, they moved to Elizabeth City, NC for a short period of private legal practice by her husband. She and her husband moved to Raleigh in 1950 when he joined the legal department at Durham Life Insurance Company. As a long time resident of Raleigh, Phyllis was an active member and volunteer in her community and church. She was a Cub Scout leader, PTA President, Meals on Wheels regular, a founding member and officer of the Coley Forest Garden Club, an active participant of the Raleigh Civinettes of the Raleigh Civitan Club, and a founding member and officer of the Ocean Isle Beach Property Owners Association. She was a member of the West Raleigh Presbyterian Church for over 59 years where she sang in the choir, served as a Circle Leader and President of the Women of the Church, church Treasurer, a member of and the first woman to serve as Chairman of the Board of Deacons, and as an elder and the first woman to serve as the Clerk of the Session. She was an active member of the The Presbytery of Orange where she served on several boards and committees. The Presbyterian Woman of the Church awarded her an " Honorary Life Membership." In 1965 she talked her husband into buying an oceanfront lot at Ocean Isle Beach, NC. The next year she drew the architectural plans and supervised the construction of their cottage. She named it ShangriLa and for the next 44 years she truly loved and cherished each moment that she could spend at Ocean Isle. Her life was dedicated to love and service to her husband and children and to providing care to her mother, mother-in-law, aunts and uncles, as they grew older. She was truly a gift from God to each of them. Private graveside services at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh will be held for Mrs. Womble.
