Francis was the second son of Alney McLean Bourland of
Kentucky and Rebecca Cook of Tennessee. Francis, along with his mother and siblings Abagail, Elizabeth, Lemuel and Lydia and a cousin John Louis, became some of the first Emigrant pioneers who crossed into Tuolumne County, California
in 1854 by way of the Sonora Pass through the Walker River Trail.
