In 1900, after his wife Anita's death, James is found living in San Andreas, CA, with his brother-in-law, Adolphus Coulter, who was the widow of James' older sister, Martha Shinn Coulter. Also in the home were Adolphus' daughter, Martha Coulter Hanscom, and Martha's husband, Nathaniel Hanscom. James is listed as Nathaniel & Martha's uncle. James' children were living just a few houses away with their maternal grandmother.
Based on his entry in the 1900 census, James is believed to be the 13th and final child of Benjamin Daniel Ranson Shinn & Martha Pattie Tucker. He is strangely absent from the 1850 & 1860 census entries for his mother Martha, where he should have been listed as 1 & 11 years old respectively. This absence has raised doubts about his parentage. He has yet to be located on any census record from 1850-1870. It is hopeful that when obtained, his CA death certificate will put an end to the question of his parentage.
