She was born July 27, 1916, in Mackinaw of Swiss-German heritage to Edward and Bertha (Ripper) Wanner. After her mother died in 1932, she took the responsibility of raising her younger siblings.
Her early education was highlighted by winning a five-dollar gold piece in the Tazewell County Dictionary Contest. She graduated from Morton Township High School in 1933.
Goldie married Dayton M. Russell on March 28, 1940, in Las Vegas. He preceded her in death on July 13, 2004.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are three sons, David (Sonia) Russell of Morton, Michael (Tina) Wong-Russell of Brookline, Mass., and Steven Russell of Morton; and one sister, Grace Blair of East Peoria.
Goldie worked for S.S. Kresge in Peoria. During World War II, she worked for U.S. Rubber in Los Angeles, manufacturing gasoline tanks for B-17s and P-51s. After the war, she and her husband returned to Morton to raise a family. She later worked as a deputy tax assessor for Elton Heiser and then for 15 years at Morton Utilities, retiring in 1981.
She and her husband later traveled throughout Europe and Asia, touring and visiting family.
Burial will be in Morton Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery.
