The first permanent settlers in Leon were James Franklin and his son James, who came from Monroe County in September of 1818, and located on lot 50. They erected a log house the same season. James Jr. died in 1843. The same fall in 1818, Abner Wise and his wife and son Abner Jr. settled on lot 49. Mrs. Wise was the first white woman in the town. Mr. Wise, known as Captain Wise died in 1838. Along with the Wise’s came Thomas W. Cheney, fifteen years old, who became a Reformed Methodist minister. They all came from Otsego County.
