August died July 30, 1955 at the Kanabec Hospital located in Mora, MN after developing pneumonia. The funeral was held at Holden Lutheran Church, Mille Lacs County, MN on August 2, 1955. The pallbearers were Harry Ruud, Nels Ruud, Albert Ruud, George Otterson, Ted Thomsen and Sigurd Langerud. Internment was at the Holden Cemetery. August had been in poor health for a number of years.

August was born in Trysil, Norway on May 4, 1867. He came to America as a young adult to LaCross, Wisconsin. He met Hannah Jacobson in LaCross and they were married October 1, 1892. In March 1900, the couple moved to Aitkin County where they lived until they died.

The couple was blessed with ten children. August's wife, Hannah, and son, George preceded him in death. August was survived by four daughters: Christine Dunken (Paul) of McGrath, Agnes Henninger (Amos) of Minneapolis, Laura Horton (William) of Moose Lake, Ella Putske (Robert) of Rock Rapids, IA. August was survived by five sons: Ernest of Yampa, Colorado, Axel, Leif, Joseph and Olaf all from McGrath. He is also survived by a foster daughter, June Bartholomew (Mrs. B.), eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. August was a charter member of Holden Lutheran Church.
