Jacob J. "Judy" Akard of Zionsville died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at Hoosier Village Health Care. He was 93.
He was born Sept. 27, 1911, in Indianapolis to William E. and Flava Akard; they preceded him in death.
He married Mary E. Livingston Akard Nov. 4, 1941; she preceded him in death in 2003 after 62 year of marriage.
He grew up in Terhune, Ind., and attended Sheridan High School. He worked for J.E. McCray Hardware in Sheridan through high school. He then went to work for Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. as a traveling hardware salesman. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in WWII; he and five of his brothers were all in the service outside the United States during WWII, and all returned home safely.
He and his wife purchased Zionsville Hardware in 1955 and later renamed it Akard True Value Hardware. They worked in the family-run business until 1974, when they sold the business to their eldest son. They retired to Port Charlotte, Fla., where they enjoyed 25 years before returning to Zionsville in 1999.
He was a charter member of the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Zionsville Lions Club and Town Crier in 1970. He was involved in the "Miracle on Main Street" during the 1960s, when the renovation and preservation of Zionsville's colonial roots began.
Survivors include sons Steve of Zionsville and Jim of Bloomington; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by daughter Carol Sue Akard Agness in 1991.
A private graveside service is planned for family. Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center in Zionsville handled the arrangements.
