Katherine was the oldest child of the Rev. Dr. Stanley L. Krebs and his first wife Anna Frantz Krebs. Her father would later be buried by her side, from 1935 to 1953.

Her father wrote in his diary "Our Baby's Birth" Saturday September 26 -

"Dawned clear, bright & warm. Anna bright and not in great pain. Had breakfast at nine with the doctor. How slowly the hours pass! Anna walks constantly, but jokes and laughs. Lunch at one. At two I got the violin to distract her mind from fast recurring pain. 3,4 o'clock, half past four, five o;clock. The Dr. calls me into the room, Mary Waller came at 3:30, so all is in readiness, and waiting, for the little newcomer. At 5 Anna began to yell at me & the Dr., awful pain. Terrible travail in bringing this precious babe into existence, which has become such a dear pet & angel. Hard labor until 17 minutes past 7. Katherine was born and her mother(& father) had great relief. I could have shouted for joy. Dr. left after eating dinner with us. I felt relieved to weep for joy. Tears in my eyes. Anna slept well."
