The parish register of St. Francis Borgia in Washington, Missouri shows that John August Breitenbach was baptized at St. John the Baptist "Gildehaus" near Villa Ridge, Missouri on 19 August 1855, and was born 22 July of that year. St. John's did not receive its first parish register until about July 1857; so, records of sacramental events were maintained at St. Francis.
The 1917 Missouri Death Record also gives his birth as 22 July 1855. The informant was John's second oldest son, Fred W Breitenbach; and it appears that he provided accurate information throughout the document.
The parish register of St. Mary's near Moselle, Missouri shows that John's burial service was held on 12 May 1917, and that he died on 10 May. Instead of giving his age, the priest wrote "born July 17, 1854" on the record. It is possible that the year of birth that appears on John's gravestone may have come from the inaccurate information on this church record.
