*** In Loving Memory of Oline***

Oline is loved, very missed and remembered forever in our hearts.

Oline was born in Aldrich, Wadena Co. MN. Her Parents

Married in Norway and Immigrated with Oline's Sister Alma

to America in 1901.

Anton and Hannah Olsen (Olson) moved to MN with their

baby Alma. Oline and her siblings grew up in the Aldrich, Wadena MN area.

Oline graduated from High School in Wadena Co. MN.

Oline earned her Teaching Degree from the State Cloud MN College.

She taught school and later met the love of her life,

Martin John Carlson. Martin's niece Jeanette was a student in her classroom.

Oline stayed with Martin's Sister Margaret Carlson Regnell's

Family in Darling MN when she first started teaching. Oline taught in a

small school house. Oline was compassionate about the importance of education.

Oline and Martin John Carlson married in Chicago Illinois in 1929.

Oline and Martin Carlson lived in Chicago approx. 4 yrs. They lived with

Martin's Cousin Emma Lundin Richard, her Spouse Charles Richard

and their Son Clayton Richard per 1930 Chicago Census.

Emma's Parents, Martin's Paternal Aunt Hilda Carlson Lundin and her

Spouse A. William Lundin owned or operated a laundry business that

employed many of Martin's relatives during hard economic

times. Martin, Emma's Spouse, other Lundin Cousins worked in

the laundry business in Chicago. Martin and Oline moved back to

Minnesota. Both had relatives living in Minnesota. Martin had many

relatives in Minnesota and Chicago Cook Co. Illinois. Martin "Mart" Carlson

was a smart, skilled, ambitious, hard working man who worked where ever he

could during the depression and war eras. Family helped Family during hard

times. Martin did ship construction work in Idaho and at Cargill in Shakopee Minnesota that included during the U.S. Military WWII era.

Martin worked abt a year in Alaska for a while early in their marriage

after they resettled in Wadena Minnesota. Oline stopped teaching in

the schools after she started having her own children.

She taught for a while when her children were younger. Oline was always a

teacher at heart. She kept teaching family and friends about life as she

raised her children and spent time with her grandchildren.

Oline was a strong advocate promoting education, voting,

community involvement, The Lutheran Faith and serving God and our

Country. Oline & Martin Carlson lived in Chicago Ill.,

Little Falls MN, Pillager MN, Darling MN , Wadena and then onto

Mpls, MN in 1945. Martin was a skilled carpenter.

Martin worked many years at the Railroad including at the

3rd and Washington Ave S. Mpls MN (Milwaukee Railroad)

Many in Oline's Family worked for the Railroad around MN. Oline's Father

Anton worked for the Railroad in Wadena. Her Uncle Ole Olsen worked

for the Railroad. Family could travel by train to visit

relatives at an employee discount. Brother in Law John "Jack" Wickstrom,

Spouse of Oline's Sister Alma worked for the Railroad in Mpls MN.

Some of Oline's relatives still live in Wadena. Oline was always excited when her Cousins, " the twins" Mattie and Karen Jordet visited and when her twin brothers Art & Harold & wife's, Families, Aless & Dena,Sister Alma Wickstroms family and so many others visited. ( The long list would fill the entire bio,) Family was Oline's top priority and she loved all her Family and Friends. Oline's doors were always open and she warmly greeted all visitors...serving them sweet treats, coffee, whatever she had... ( or what others brought) for a few hours to spending a week...Oline often had lots of company. We gathered at her home with many family members often and especially on Holidays. Oline was adored by all who knew her and was everyone's favorite. A couple different nephews from Wadena lived with Oline at different times when they attended college or worked in Mpls.. Despite the rise in crime, Oline remained living

at her home in N. Mpls until just abt a few years before she passed away.

Many Family were very concerned about her residing in a high crime area of

North Mpls. Oline refused to consider moving elsewhere. She had many happy

memories in her big old house and didn't want to move. She also always had company and her Son Roger (Butch) lived with her. She was the head of

household since 1969 when her beloved Martin passed away.

Until she was seriously ill, she managed most of own independent

living needs as well as providing for Butch. She always had plenty of

eager home chore helpers within her large family. It was an honor. She

She stayed in her home until she was too seriously ill to live there. Oline

had some nice neighbors too who helped her out of kindness and watched

out for her. Her next door neighbor Marion Loso was a retired

nurse and her emergency contact too for Lifeline, along with family contacts.

Oline had a 8x10 photo of her Grandson who was a Police Officer on her

living room end table. Oline loved her home and didn't want to move elsewhere..

Grandpa Martin worked at the Railroad in Mpls many years before he retired.

Oline worked long hours long after retirement and long after Martin passed away as the Office Manager at Raze Nursery in N. Mpls off Lyndale Ave N. The freeway is there now. Oline lived in Mpls until she could not live alone anymore, just years before she passed away. She has many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in the Twin Cities area. Oline's daughter Marlene first cared for her, in her home, then Marlene's daughter took over and cared for Oline. Just as Oline and Martin took care of Oline's elderly parents in their Mpls home. Marlene was very ill and passed away the following Aug.2005. Oline was active with the League of Women Voters. Oline was a beloved Wife, Mother, Grandma, Aunt, Cousin, Friend and much more. She strongly advocated that her family further their education. Oline loved to garden, have family visits, chat.

For many years we were also greeted by Oline's adorable terrier poodle

mix great companion "Tuffy". Tuffy was great with children.

It was sad for Grandma and all of us when Tuffy passed away. Grandma also

enjoyed the many birds when she was working at the Raze Nursery. Oline

was a great baker, the best at sweets and breads. She loved making

Norwegian treats including krumkake cookies and

Lefsa. Oline, her late daughter Marlene, grandchildren, other family made

huge batches of Christmas cookies for all every year. No comments about the

Lutefisk she served on Holidays. They say you have to acquire the taste

for Lutefisk and Oline had eaten Lutefisk since childhood.. Grandma Oline

made traditional Norwegian food for all of us during Christmas Holidays.

Her children and grandchildren cooked with her and helped in her kitchen.

She always had lots of helpers and she always welcomed company.

Everyone enjoyed visiting Oline and it was an honor to help her in

any way we could..She was independent and worked hard all of her life.

We always got to visit with relatives who visited including those from

out of town. Now, years later, we started having Olson family reunions.

We never had to do that when Oline was with us. We often saw other

relatives at her house. Some of us knew groups of each family well

and not others, but we all knew each other. Oline could not have

invited all of us over at a given time as when the families grew,

there were way to many relatives to have all the different families

all over at once. She managed to fit many family guests into

her four bedroom home who visited from out of town...She always

laughed about how many family members she could fit in

her home. It brought her much joy. She would call to invite guests over. Her

other children and grandchildren were regular visitors. She would notify groups

of us when the special guests or out of town guests would be there..

Many times We all brought food and treats for our visits. We enjoyed helping her

her clean, mow, shovel, make repairs or whatever else we could do. Oline

always had some family coming over or family who had just left.

Christmas Eve was open doors and everyone Welcome.. We just came in

shifts as our families grew... In later years, she celebrated

Christmas Eve and all the other holidays at other Family Members homes.

Much has changed in our Family since Oline has passed away in 2004.

She was that person in our Family who motivated everyone to get together.

Oline shared many stories about family with us.. including when the basketball players/ team members from Wadena came to Mpls for the basketball tournaments. One time they were snow bound during a bad snow storm and many needed to stay with Oline until they could travel home. Oline entertained all when she and Grandpa Martin had their Cabin across the street from Lake Mtka. Oline loved Martin with all her heart. Despite Martin passing away unexpectedly at home in 1969, Grandma Oline never dated again. We all miss our wonderful Grandpa Martin. She told us stories about him, talked about him and kept his memory alive. Oline worked at Raze Nursery in Mpls long past retirement. Oline was an inspiration to all. Oline was a strong faith based woman. She loved us to take her to church on Sundays and Holidays at the

Mpls Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Now River of Life. Oline was very active

Member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in North Mpls, not far from her home. Going to church with Grandma Oline was an honor. Memorials in her honor were directed to her church toward their Loaves & Fishes Food Program and Youth Program after she passed away. All of Oline's children went there, many of her Grandchildren were baptized there. Oline Funeral's services were there. Oline loved the song Nikolina and Lutheran Hymns. Oline is proudly holding a Norwegian Prayer plaque in the Memorial Collage photo on this site. She was showing it to her Gr.Great Grandchildren, with her daughter Marlene & grand daughter. And telling them her Family History. Oline was receiving Hospice Care at Marlenes Home and then in her Grand daughters home before she passed away. If you knew Grandma Oline, you knew how many people loved her. Marlene and her daughter who cared for Oline welcomed all of us to visit Grandma in their homes. This writer brought Grandma a crystal Angel at a store near her N. Mpls home that was near the Woolworths she used to take us. She loved looking at the angel, watching it glow from a candle in the room shortly before she passed away. Her Memory was very poor at that time and she was bedridden, but she remembered our trips to Woolworths on Broadway Ave. N. Mpls.

Oline used to take us downtown Mpls on the bus too, clothes shopping.

Neither Oline and Martin no longer drove or owned a car after the late 1940's

or early 1950's. They sold their car sometime after WWII during hard times.

They got around the inner City of Mpls just fine by bus or train or if another

relative drove them some where. Before our Families became very large,

Oline loved Taking the grandchildren downtown Mpls during the

Christmas Holidays to see the wonderful

Holiday decorations along the downtown Mpls Nicollet Ave Mall. It

was a fun tradition too. Oline drove a car when they resided in Wadena but she

Oline never drove a car when they moved to Mpls and she was older . She loved

talking about the many good memories all her life.

Oline received in home hospice prior to passing away . First Marlene and Don

Cadotte, then Marlene's Daughter provided Oline with much loving 24/7 care in their

homes. This writer stayed at Marlene's daughters home with her Family, with Marlene, her daughters and another cousin the days before Grandma passed away. We were all by Grandma's side, with her around the clock. We were by Grandma Olines's side holding her in our arms, holding her hands when she peacefully passed away. We were trying our best as we sang Grandma Oline's favorite church hymns to her from the Lutheran Hymnal and read to her from her prayer book. ( none of us would have invited to be in a choir) Immediately after Grandma Oline passed away there was literally a huge glowing star surrounded by many more stars in the beautiful glowing sky. That could have made a non-believer think twice. We miss Oline very much. Grandma passed away at her Grand Daughters home in Belle Plain MN, after living years in Mpls. We will always love Oline dearly and remember her in our hearts. We were blessed Oline lived for 98 yrs!

Our Family will remember our wonderful Grandma Oline forever.

Many Family continue to share our fond memories of our

our beloved Grandma Oline. We also share

fond memories at our Annual Carlson Reunion

and recent Olsen Olson Family Reunions.

Regnell Family Members always talk about

when she was a Teacher and lived in Darling MN with Martin's Sister

Margaret Carlson Regnell, her Spouse Art Regnell and their children. Oline taught

many children in the small old schoolhouse in Darling MN. (Little Falls MN area)

Oline also taught at U.S. Military MN base Fort Ripley site. Oline taught the Regnell

children in Margaret and Art's Family, Clara and Bill Regnell's children and

Esther Regnell Eystads children, many others. The Eystad Family joined us at our Carlson Reunions and other Family events most of our lives.

Esther Regnell Eystad is the late beloved sister of Art and Bill Regnell.

After Oline's marriage to Margaret and Clara's brother Martin John

Carlson, Oline relocated with Martin. They were overjoyed that Oline married

into their Family. She was the favorite of Everyone who ever knew her. They

missed her as their Teacher when she moved away with Martin. They saw her

often throughout their lives. Rumor has it amongst Family that Oline

was one of the best teachers ever... Oline got all of our votes...

Celebrating Oline Carlson's Life and our cherished Memories of her is an Honor. All Family and Friends welcome to enter their Memoirs and Tributes for

Oline on her Memorial site. Oline was that favorite Grandma, favorite Aunt, favorite

person in everyone's memory.

Oline's Funeral Services were held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church,

Now River of Life Church, 2200 Fremont Ave N. Mpls, MN.

Interment Services were held at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Our late beloved Grandparents Oline and Martin John Carlson are both

laid to rest at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Oline Olson Carlson was our Family history buff. This was a very huge passion of Oline's. She loved talking about Family, how her family came here from Norway and her family tree. Oline wrote a Family Tree for her High School Project. Oline's Grandson & Family have added to that list and still searching for more Family history. Grandma inspired at least two of us to continue her efforts. Our Family has re-established some ties to Norway. They have shared Family history. Oline's Oldest Son & Grandchildren visited relatives in Norway in 2011. We didn't have the internet when Grandma was trying to gather her information. It would be fun today to see Oline's face if she could get on a computer and do family research.

to Note: Oline's Father's name was Anton Olsen Mellemdokken in Norway

Spelled Olson after immigration to Wadena MN, USA. Oline's maiden name

spelled Olson, not Olsen. They are the same family, same parents. Oline

always talked about that name change from using the "e" to using the "o".

They have been used interchanged for the same person, even on legal

documents and census reports. Oline's brother Aless changed his Olson

USA spelling back to Olsen when he became an adult.

We have many wonderful memories of our

sweet wonderful outgoing Grandma Oline.

She loved gardening and growing plants.

Many family visited Oline at Raze Nursery.

She worked full time at Raze Nursery in N. Mpls as Office Manager into the late 1980's until the freeway took the N. Mpls site on Lyndale. The Owners Hayes and Althea Raze were her same age. Oline also worked with their son Dalton (sp), others. They'd go out for lunch, spent much time together and all worked hard. Oline invited all to visit her at work, showed off their many birds. Oline was a master gardener.. As was Martin.. Oline loved to share transplants of the plants in her yard and her houseplants. Her daisies, morning glories are still growing strong in family yards around the Twin Cities area.. Oline's niece via her late Sister Alma remembers Oline giving her slips of her plants. Oline's grand daughter got slips of her daises from Oline's daughter Marlene's yard that grow everywhere...Oline and Martin loved to show their grandchildren their garden and work with them to garden.. Their oldest son took on their master gardener title in our family. Daughter Marlene loved plants too. Children and Grandchild spent hours with them gardening, watering plants, talking.

Oline was allergic to pine trees. She sold them at Raze Nursery. Her eyes got puffy after working long hours over the Christmas season. Despite allergies, she always had a beautifully decorated white sprayed Christmas tree in her own home during the Christmas Season. And always, a house full of Relatives.

We are striving, in Grandma Oline's Honor to continue to put our Family tree history together, gather family history In her Memory. ( One of Oline's passions.) Much family history on Ancestry.com Remaining in contact with relatives and finding Norway relatives meant a lot to Grandma Oline. Oline's Son and some grandchildren have visited relatives in Norway and are communicating with those relatives. They provided added family history, photos now on the ancestry.com site. It is an honor to carry on Oline's passion.

This Writer interviewed our Grandmother Oline and typed her Family History

"Norwegian Roots" sketch in 1999. Most of our MN Family has a copy.

Now as of 2014, our relatives we have reunited ties with from Norway

have a copy in Norway...A copy was given to the Wadena Co. Historical Society in

Wadena MN . There was so much more that could have been written....

We should have been taking notes with all

the Family history she shared and audiotaped

Oline. We had the opportunity for the many

years we were blessed to have her in our

lives. Her interview is now attached to

Oline's Memorial. It's basic, she was

elderly and shared what she remembered as

this writer took notes. She did a great

job considering her age. Oline was happy

that we wrote her story. At the time we never

knew that it would be one of the many

keepsakes our Dear Oline left our Family.

Oline would have been thrilled about our

reuniting with Relatives in Norway.

After Oline's adorable elderly Cousins

Mattie and Karen Jordet passed away, we

lost ties with our Relatives from Norway

Oline, Mattie and Karen would drink

coffee and talk for hours about

Norway. Mattie and Karen helped Oline

communicate with relatives from

Norway. It was very sad for Oline

we lost contact with relatives in

Norway due to language barriers.

To we email back and forth with some

of our Relatives who are bi-lingual

in Norway. Grandma Oline would be pleased we have re-established

our ties with both Olsen-Mellemsdokken Family and

the Øverjordet Family Member Descendants who live in Norway.
