In the recent War he served as a Captain in the First Regiment of South Carolina Artillery. Subsequently he became a member of the Bar of San Francisco and merited the honours of his profession. But his highest distinction was that he was a soldier of the Cross and strove to follow His Master in humble trust and holy living. He had much to live for in his wife, his children and what the world calls fortune, but death was his great gain for he passed from the joys of earth to the blessings of heaven from the vanities of time to the riches of eternity.
