Daughter of William Bull and Mary Motte (Alston) Pringle of Charleston, South Carolina. She was the great granddaughter of Rebecca Motte of Revolutionary War fame.The daughter of an elite Charleston family, Mary attended private schools in Charleston when she was young. In 1852, she met Yale professor Donald G. Mitchell, and they were married in 1853. She was a passionate Confederate, remaining true to her roots despite living in New Haven, CT and suffered the scorn of her neighbors during the War Between the States. She died at her and her husband's country estate in New Haven.
