It is believed that John Martin was one of the younger sons of Josiah Saurman of Virginia. He was born there in 1824, naming his oldest son Thomas Jefferson Saurman in respect for a fellow Virginian. John moved north to Ohio and married Lucinda Parsons in Cuyahoga county in 1843. John and Lucinda then moved to Whitley County, Indiana and eventually to Michigan around 1855. His youngest son, Burt, who was just one when his father died, stated that he knew the grave location and could find it upon visiting. When John was 39 years old, living in Moscow Twp. Hillsdale Co., he was drafted into the Civil War under Michigan's Sixteenth Infantry on Feb 10, 1863. With five children and given his age he sought a substitute named John Ray. Records show him living in Horton Village, Jackson Co., shortly after. John died sometime between 1863 and 1865. One unsubstantiated source claimed he died in a Railroad accident. His grandaughter Merta Hunt states in a letter to Earl Saurman that John is buried in the Hanover Cemetery which makes sense with where he would have been living in 1863. I have however found no documentation for his death or burial. His son Hirum "Burt" was said to be able to walk up to his grave. There is no stone currently visible, presumably it has fallen down and gotten covered by grass.
