Elijah was a farmer but also worked outside the mines as the 'sandman', the guy who worked with dynamiters to loosen up coal. He was very religious and went to church every Sunday. He was married to Lena Roxie Vannatter. Elijah's father and mother were James Iverson Pauley and Rosena Miller Pauley. Elijah and Roxie had 11 children, Edainah(b.1915), Iverson(b.1917), Ely Leslie(b.1919), Esther(b.1921), Nettie(b.1923)died age 2, Hubert(b.1926), Garnet, Timothy Oather(b.1932), Thomas(died 6 months), Bonnie.
