Jewell Foster, 94, of Lubbock, passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at the Garrison Center. Graveside services are planned for 3 p.m. today, at Resthaven Memorial Park, with Reverend Roland Rose officiating.
Jewell Ann Foster was born Aug. 9, 1913, in Bray, Okla., to Albert and Mary Jane (Lindsey) Rose. She grew up in Oklahoma and graduated from East Central Oklahoma University. She came to Lubbock in 1952 and received her Master's Degree in Education from Texas Tech University. She taught fourth grade at Dupre Elementary, was an art teacher at R.W. Matthews Junior High, and was with Monterey High School as an art teacher when it opened. She was activity director at Coronado High School, and then became the guidance counselor there. She then became the coordinator of vocational education for L.I.S.D., retiring in 1979. She worked for eight years as career counselor for South Plains College, Lubbock Campus.
Jewell was a member of the Texas State Teacher's Association, and served as President of the South Plains Unit of the T.S.T.A. She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and the Altrusa Club. As an art teacher and artist, she loved to do craftwork. Her family fondly remembers her as tough as a boot'.
Jewell is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and her long-time friend, Lucille Adams, of Lubbock.
