Zachariah was born the son of John Stewart and Agnes Warren in Tennessee.

Like his parents, aunts, and uncles; he was a pioneer at heart. His parents and numerous relatives spent a 16 year hiatus [1814-1830] in Tennessee after leaving Franklin Co Virginia, they moved north into Morgan and Macoupin Counties of Illinois between 1828-30. They were landowners/farmers, and usually among the earliest settlers in the region. Many remained in Macoupin and Morgan Counties, but some of the Richards and Stewart families moved on to Missouri and Iowa.

Zachariah served [along with John Chapman, and Edmund Hendley Richards Jr., a cousin] as a Corporal in the 4th Regiment, 3rd Brigade, Sharp's Company during the Blackhawk War in 1831-32.

Zachariah chose Elizabeth England as his bride and married her on December 10 1832 in Macoupin Co IL.

By 1836, Zachariah had moved his family into Van Buren County Iowa [south east portion of the state], along with his younger brother John & family; who was his neighbor [as in 1840 census].

Their children:
1. Agnes [1834] IL
2. Wesley [1836] IA
