Andrew J. Dowdy, 33 years, 46th Alabama Reg.∼The youngest son of Armstead and Elizabeth Cross Dowdy, Andrew was born abt 1833 in Georgia, probably Franklin County.
He married Mary Ann Hatley in abt 1856, location unknown but it was possibly in Alabama. Eldest son, James Thomas Wiley Dowdy was born the following year in Lauderdale County, Alabama.
At the 1860 U S Federal Census, Andrew and Mary Ann Dowdy are enumerated in Randolph County, AL with their two eldest children: James Thomas Wiley and William Riley Dowdy. Son Joseph M was born later that year.
He enlisted with the 46th Alabama Infantry in 1862; daughter Mary Ann 'Matilda' was also born that same year.
He died near the end of the U S Civil War, apparently a prisoner of war and possibly at a POW Camp in Texas. A memorial in the Oak Woods Cemetery, Chicago, IL commemorating the names of the U S Civil War Confederate Dead includes his name.
