"C. S. Barker died at his home in Nodaway township, Adams county, Iowa, Oct. 17th, 1893, aged 59 years. Deceased was born in Perry county, Ohio, Jan 30th, 1833; was married to Lucretia Siniff in Fairfield county, March 17th, 1863. To those parents were born five children, two of whom are dead.
Deceased came to Adams county in 1873, locating on the farm where he died. Mr. Barker had been a consistent member of the M. E. church for 42 years and was one of Nodaway's most honored and respected citizens. His sickness was lingering and complicated but no word of complaint ever fell from his lips. He died in the fall hope of a better world beyond. Funeral services were held at his late residence, Rev. Mr. Harned of Brooks officiating.
The discourse very appropriate, was not so much a eulogy on the life and character of deceased which was well known to be of the highest order, nor an attempt to follow the departed spirit to its home beyond, but a kindly warning and exhortation to the living that they too must sooner or later follow in the wake of the friend to whom they were then paying their tribute of respect and esteem. The discourse was most fitting and comprehensive summary of man's duties, obligations and responsibilities to his creator; the certainty of death, a judgement to come, and of a furture reward and punishment according to life and character as viewed by the unerring mind of God. After services at home, Brother Barker was follwed to his last resting place by a very large procession of sorrowing relatives and friends. He was interred in Methodist Grove Cemetery.
