From the one picture found of Laura, she appears to be of a small stature with dark hair, eye color unknown, & dark complexion. Her children were also of a small stature.
Family legend states Laura's middle name was Josephine but a family history of Laura's father, Joseph Roark, lists her as Jane.
Laura, at the age of three, moved from Cole County to Vernon County, MO where she grew to adulthood & met/married Samuel S. Cox. Upon moving with her husband & family to Cherokee County, Indian Territory prior to 1900 - which later became Welch, Craig County, OK - Laura joined the Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained an active member until her death.
2 additional children were born to their union after their arrival in OK - making a total of 8. Her life was difficult & Laura worked hard making a home for her family. She was loved by family & neighbors alike.
On 4/12/1907, while visiting with neighbors in her home, Laura, at age 42 & expecting her 9th child, became ill. The child, a son named Leonard, after Samuel's brother Leonard William Cox, was born early & died at birth along with his mother. As there are no death certificates for that year, the exact cause of death will never be known. Only through family members do we know it was complications from childbirth.
The funeral was held in the Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon @ 2:00 p.m. Laura was buried in the Welch Cemetery, Welch, Craig County, OK.
