Verna Lucille Thimmes was born April 15, 1919 in Mechanicsville, Iowa, daughter of Leo and Margaret (Milligan) Thimmes. She married Sherrill E. Baker, Sr., on December 9, 1939 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He died on February 21, 2002. She farmed with her husband for many years. After retiring she worked at the Clarence Nursing Home and Maquoketa Care Center. She was a very active member of the Oxford Junction United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Sherrill (Sally) Baker, Jr. and Gary Baker, both of Oxford Junction; 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; and 3 sisters-in-law, Neva Baker and Marianne (Arthur) Baker, both of Anamosa, and Betty Truesdell of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parent, a grandson, one sister and three brothers.
