When Elbert was around five years old (according to his sister, Rose) he threw a log into the fire and it exploded causing severe burns to his face and body. He lost his mother when he was only 7 years old. He lived the rest of his growing yrs with his father and his oldest sister, Martha "Mattie" and her family. He finally succumbed to Tuberculosis when he was 19 years of age.
