During the Civil War, he enlisted in Company C of the 1st Oregon Cavalry. He enlisted on March 16, 1863 at Camp Baker, Oregon; and three years later, was discharged March 16, 1866 at Ft Vancouver, Washington.
Richard married Martha Ann Mathis on March 12, 1875 in San Bernardino County California. They lived in Southern California for the first years of their marriage. Their second child Robert was born in California in 1880. The family moved to Oregon by 1885 and was still there when their youngest child Mable was born in 1893. Richard is listed in Jackson County, Oregon for the 1890 Census of Union Veterans and Widows of the Civil War
By June 1898, the Sinclair Family is back in California. Richard is recorded in the 1898 Great Register of California as a resident of Blake, California (San Bernardino County).
Martha Ann dies sometime between the 1893 and 1900. He is a widower by the time of the 1900 Census. It is unknown whether she died in Oregon or after the family returned to California. Richard and the five children are living in Downey, California at the time of the 1900 Census.
In January 1902, Richard is admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Sawtelle, California. He is discharged, at his own request, in July 1905 but six months later is readmitted to the home. On his records at the home, it indicates that he was 5' 7" in height and could read and write. He lives at the soldiers home until his death. He is residing there at the time of the 1910 census.
Richard died December 14, 1910, age 73, and is buried nearby at the Los Angeles National Cemetery.
