The eldest of five siblings (Ethyl Thoren, Bertha Brown, Blanche Wood and Arthur McMillan) Gus was born in DeWitt, Michigan. He came with his parents to Kansas in 1880, where the family settled on a farm west of Green in Clay County. Gus received his education at Coffel and Green schools and attended Green Methodist Church.

He married Mabel Smith February 3, 1898 at the home of Mabel's parents in Clay Center, and celebrated 56 years of marriage. Their daughter Oleda passed away in infancy. Their son Emery C. McMillan (1900-1976) lived at Randolph and is buried with his wife Pearl G. at Fancy Creek Randolph Cemetery, Riley County, Kansas.

Gus was a pipe smoker and died of cancer that started on his lip.
