National Skyway Freight 1945, Pilot

Lieutenant Richard C Sawyer was the son of Damian Charles Sawyer and Alice Victoria (Lundberg) Sawyer. He was born in Ohio 29 May 1920. His siblings were Muriel A Sawyer and Patricia L Sawyer, and Sharon Lee Sawyer. In 1930, the family was residing in Lockmoor, Wayne County, Michigan. In 1940, the family was residing in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. He enlisted in the service in Minnesota 29 September 1942.

He was married to Janet B (--?--) Sawyer.

Post-war, several of the CBI Vets and Flying Tiger All Volunteer Group flyers formed a civilian freight air carrier back in the states and called it the Flying Tiger Line, and National Skyway Freight. They held various contracts to haul different types of loads cross-country.

Pilot Richard C Sawyer, Co-Pilot Lawrence 'Molloy' Feemster, and Flight Engineer Ronald E 'Doc' Lewis, were flying in a National Skyway Freight Budd RB-1, tail number NC 45353, hauling a load of Newsweek Magazines from Dayton, Ohio to Los Angeles, California. They were flying along the planned route, headed westbound from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and had just passed over the Acomita intermediate airway, when the aircraft went into a steep dive. Attempting to pull up out of the dive, the Pilot and Co-Pilot tried to belly-land the aircraft, however it crashed on the rim of San Rafel Mesa, New Mexico, which is located just outside of Grants*. Pilot Sawyer and Co-Pilot Feemster did not survive the tragic crash. Flight Engineer 'Doc' Lewis, however, was the sole survivor.
