Mrs. Newell was born April 24, 1914 in Kurreville, the daughter of George and Amanda (Bryan) Welker. She married John A. Newell on June 11, 1932 in Mayfield. He preceded her in death on April 27, 1961. Mrs. Newell was a member of Christ Gospel Church in Millersville.
Surviving are eight sons, Adam (wife, Bertha) Newell of Advance, Rev. Charles (wife, Carma) Newell, Carl Sr. (wife, Janice) Newell, Leslie Sr. (wife, Laverne) Newell, Johnny Newell Sr. and Loy Gene (wife, Beth “Betty”) Newell, all of Jackson, Lyman Verdell (wife, Marie) Newell of Webster Groves and George “Randy” (wife, Marinda Joyce) Newell of Oak Ridge; five daughters, Mrs. Bennie (Pauline) Kimbel, Mrs. Donald (Patsy) Pulliam and Mrs. Robert (Aline) Poe, all of Jackson, Mrs. John (Alice) Kester of Washington, Indiana and Ms Karen Jackson of Oak Ridge; three sisters, Mrs. Ella Niswonger of Cape Girardeau, Mrs. John Jr. (Jean) Schreiner of Jackson and Mrs. Charles William I (Ollie Marie) Hager of Taylorville, Illinois; two brothers, Lyman Welker of Jackson and Leslie Lee (wife, Beatrice) Welker of East Alton, Illinois; one half-brother, William Welker of Cape Girardeau; one half-sister, Mrs. Clara Gagnepain of Perryville; 36 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Terry Newell; three brothers, Otis Welker, Clarence Welker and Fred Welker; three sisters, Sadie Welker, Connie Green and Cloa Stevens; two half-brothers, Edward Welker and Charles Chester Hunter; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 1987, at McCombs Funeral Home. Rev. James Brown officiated, with burial following at Old Salem Cemetery in Millersville.
