Olan started one of first girls college basketball teams in state in 1943. Served on the U.S. Women's Olympic Committee for 25 years and helped establish women's basketball as an olympic sport. In 1965 and 1971, he was assistant coach to the U.S. Women's team for the Pan-Am games in Winnipeg, Canada. He was the first women's basketball coach to be inducted into the Helm's Hall of Fame in 1967.

Olan married Marguerite Thelma O'Neall on June 21, 1930.
