William E. Zastrow was born in Leaf Valley township, Douglas county on March 22, 1889, the son of Edward and Augusta Zastrow. He was baptized and confirmed in the Ebenezer Lutheran church in Leaf Valley and grew to manhood on the home farm.
On May 28, 1913 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Meissner. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Zastrow farmed in Leaf Valley township, later in Ida township, until their retirement in 1950. They made their home in Osakis for eleven years and for the past five years they have been residents of Alexandria.
Mr. Zastrow died at the Parkers Prairie hospital on October 23, 1966 at the age of 77 years, seven months and 11 days. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and four children: Iverdeen (Mrs. George Ziegelmann) of St. Paul, Aaron of Bemidji, Edgar of Alexandria, and Mavis (Mrs. David Smith) of Garfield. Also surviving are 27 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, ten sisters and brothers: Frank of Alexandria, Mrs. Louise Zweig of Alexandria, Ida (Mrs. Gerhart Linzen) of Minneapolis, Josephine (Mrs. Walter Toepke) of Mesa, Ariz., Emma (Mrs. Arthur Kleweno) of Los Angeles, Calif., Walter of Hopkins, Edward of Minneapolis, Arthur of Wayzata, Lydia (Mrs. Robert Krueger) of Garfield and Ewald of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by a daughter and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held October 26, 1966 from the Zion Lutheran church in Alexandria. Rev. K. K. Hill officiated. Interment was in Kinkead cemetery, Alexandria. The pallbearers were: Jerry Zastrow, Ronald Zastrow, Clifford Ziegelmann, Donald Ziegelmann, Wayne Ronning and Ronald Mikkelson.
