Civil War: Company C, 6th Vermont Infantry

Newman Martin Lincoln was a resident at Woodstock, Vermont, when he enlisted as a private for 3 years on September 6, 1864. He was mustered into Company C, 6th Vermont Infantry. Private Lincoln was mustered out at Washington, D.C., on June 19, 1865. After the war he married [1] Lucy Jane Emily Perkins (1843, VT-bef. 1880, VT) at Weathersfield, Vermont, on January 1, 1867. After Lucy's death he filed for a Civil War veteran disability pension in Vermont on November 24, 1879, and received certificate No. 529,622. He was a widower living with his mother and two young sons at Woodstock, Vermont, in 1880 (1880 US Census). He married [2] Lettie M. Cobb [1858-1906] at Woodstock, Vermont, on October 26, 1887. He was a carpenter living at Woodstock, Vermont, in 1890 (1890 Veterans Schedule). He was still working as a carpenter and living with Lettie and Gladys at Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1900, and he was a widower still there living with Gladys in 1910 (1900, 1910 US Census). After his daughter's marriage to Harold Mellor in October 1910, he accompanied them to Pasadena, California, in 1911. He was a widower when he was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle, California, on March 10, 1914. He remained at the Sawtelle soldiers home until his death the following year and he was buried in the adjacent Los Angeles National Cemetery. His soldiers home record indicates his next-of-kin as his daughter, Mrs. Gladys F. Mellor, of Pasadena, California.
