William H. Zigler (Ziegler Zeigler) was the son of Michael and Mary Maderson Zigler. He was born in Ohio and spent time as a hunter on the plains of Kansas.

By 1875 he was living in Marion County, Kansas and married to Rachel R. Winner. They had two sons, Frank "Elmer" and Clarence Alvin. Rachel died young, before 1880.
