Leanah was one of 15 children born to Robert "Bob" David Rogers, Jr. and Martha Jane "Jenny" Turner who were married in Greene County, TN, then later settled in Buncombe County, NC. She was a niece of Hugh Rogers who settled on Fines Creek in Haywood County. Leanah's paternal grandparents were Robert David and Frances "Fannie" Russell Rogers. Her maternal grandparents were James and Mary Patton Turner.

Leanah's father died in 1819. In 1830 her mother Jenny remarried, this time to Crestus Howell Moss.

Leonah and John were the parents of 9 children: Margaret, Harriett, Sallie, Martha, Julia, Amelia, James Marion, George Washington, and Joseph Marcus Lafayette McCracken.
