Jacob Bryant is the only known Lumbee Indian, of Robeson Co, NC to have served in the war. Last year his grave was discovered. On May 16, 2009 UDC Camp Ryan Chapter #536 held a memorial service, placing an iron cross by his headstone.
Boy Scout Troops #322 and #416 led the Pledge of Allegiance. Followed by a ritual of prayer, call to remembrance, unveiling of marker, dedication, tribute, floral offering, and ending with a bendiction. Son of Confederate Veterans Fayetteville Arsenal Camp #168 were on hand for a 21 gun salute. There was even a small artillery piece, which rang out 3 times. It all ended with the playing of taps by a bugler. After the ceremony, refreshments were available.
None of this would have happened without the hard work of Charles Bryant, gg grandson and his daughter Phyllis Lowry.
