Death Record - James M. Iden

James M. Iden, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Humphrey Iden was born in Circleville, Pickaway county, Ohio, November 28, 1832. When he was five years old his mother died, his father living until he attained the age of twenty-one. When James was seven years old he came to Illinois with his uncle John Anderson. They lived near Middletown for two years and then moved to a farm near Mt. Pulaski, called the Blue Mound. In 1855 he was united in marriage to Eliza Witter. To this union four children were born, John A., who resides on a farm near Lake Fork, Clarence E. a farmer of Niantic, Edwin J., of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Flora Hageman of Ford, Kas. All were present at the funeral except Edwin. In August in 1862, he enlisted in the Civil War in the 106 Illinois Regiment and served till the close of the war. He proved a true soldier to the last. He was always of a very jolly disposition and this won for him a large circle of friends. Early in life James united with the Christian church but later drifted away. Being dissatisfied with the sort of life he was leading he went back to the church and for the past eight years he has led a good Christian life. In January, 1898, he became a member of the Soldiers' Home at Quincy, Ill. He always spent a great part of each year visiting his children. At 12:20 a.m. Sunday, May 2, 1909. He died at the home of his son, John A. Iden, aged 76 years 5 months and 4 days. He leaves to mourn his loss besides the four children named, an aged sister, Mary J. Broughton of Lincoln and a brother, John T. of Oklahoma, who also served the Union during the Civil War. Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Mt. Pulaski at 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 3, conducted by Rev. M.M.Show. His body was laid to rest in the Mr. Pulaski cemetery. Sam Walker Past G.A.R. had charge of the service at the grave.
