Arthur Altizer Killed In Auto-Bus Smash-Up(Southwest Times Sun Sept 15, 1946
Arthur G. Altizer, Jr., 24-year old employee of the Pulaski Veneer Corporation, was instantly
killed about 5 o'clock Saturday morning when his automobile was involved in a head-on collision
with a loaded Greyhound bus on US 11 about three and one-half miles east of Wytheville.
Three persons were injured slightly when the bus, which was carrying 38 passengers, left the
highway and crashed on it's right side. Immediately after the passengers climbed to freedom through
the emergency exit, the bus caught fire and was totally destroyed.
The injured were Mrs. Philamena Negrito, of Yorktown. O., and Pfc and Mrs. Robert C. McIlwain, of Detroit. They were given first aid treatment at the Wytheville hospital and discharged. State Trooper W. J. Elliott, who investigated, reported. All the passengers traveling on the Winston-Salem to Charleston bus were transferred to other busses and continued their journey, the Wytheville passenger agent said.
First Street Resident
Young Altizer, who was heading toward Pulaski alone from an undetermined point, resided at 105 First street, S. W., in the McNew apartments. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katherine Meredith Altizer, a daughter, Anna Jean, 3; an 18-months-old son, Roger Dean; his mother, Mrs. Arthur G. Altizer, Sr., of Walnut Avenue; one brother, Arko; and two sisters, Mrs. Lincoln Baugh, and Mrs. Arthur C. Grantham, all of Pulaski. (Katherine was about 5 months pregnant with their third child, Barbara Jane, when AG was killed.)
The victim was released from the U. S. army about a year ago under medical discharge because of a wound received while fighting in Belgium.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p. m. at Thornspring Methodist church, with the Rev. W. A. Warner in charge and the Revs. Clifton and Virgil Anderson assisting. Burial will be in Thornspring cemetery.
The body will remain at the home of his mother at 705 Walnut avenue until the hour of the funeral.
