Services set for Eloise Sugg, community activist

Eloise E. Sugg, a resident of Whittier for 80 years and active member of the community, died of pneumonia at SD Hospice on June 15.
A funeral will be held at 1p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Chapel at Rose Hill Memorial Park, followed by internment in the Garden of Love.

Her friend the Rev. Hans Holborn of First United Methodist Church will officiate. Eastern Star Chapter 144 will conduct a ceremony and her brother Marvin H. Martin will sing. She was born Eloise Eldora Martin to Vera and Ambrose Martin in Paonia, Colo. The family then moved to Whittier, where Eloise graduated from Whittier High in 1939 and attended Fullerton College.

She had a lifelong love of music. She performed in a musical trio with sisters Edna and Pauline, sang in Whittier's Calvary Baptist Church Choir, she played trombone in the Whittier High Band, also in the Fullerton Junior College Band and participated in the 1941 Rose Parade. She was President of the Handel Oratoria Society in 1947 and later joined the Sweet Adelines of Whittier, the First United Methodist Choir and sang with the Whittier Women's Chorus.

Eloise married L. Ray Sugg in 1941 at Calvary Baptist Church. After Ray finished his military service, they had two children, LetaRae Sugg, in 1947 and Ralph Martin Sugg in 1952. The family lived on Cliota Street in Whittier for 41 years.

Eloise was an executive secretary for the Whittier Chamber of Commerce, Union Pacific Railroad, Fred C. Nelles School, Norwalk State Hospital and was business manager for her husband's painting contracting business until 1983. She returned to Rio Hondo College and obtained an associate degree, after which she became a legal secretary.

Her community activities included: president of the Mills School PTA, Cub Scout den mother, Job's Daughters choir director, Whittier Junior Women's Club, Whittier Women's Club, she was instrumental in the formation of Whittier Presbyterian Hospital Auxiliary in which she became a founding life member, joined Hacienda Chapter Eastern Star and was installed as Worthy Matron

in 1967.

Eloise and her husband were active in Christian Character Builders' Class of Whittier First United Methodist Church. They were both enthusiastic environmentalists who traveled the nation and the world in their pursuits.

Eloise is survived by her husband, who now resides in Rancho San Diego; brother Marvin H. Martin and sister-in-law Doris of Cottonwood, Ariz.; sister Pauline Maddox of San Bernardino; daughter LetaRae Bender and her husband, Dr. Robert Bender, of Rancho San Diego; and son Ralph Martin Sugg and his wife, Debbie. Eloise also leaves six grandchildren.
