Anna Jansen Claassen was the third child of Cornelius and Helena Jansen. At age 17 she came with her family to Canada and later the U.S. when her father was exiled by the Russian government for his role in organizing a Mennonite exodus from the country in response to Czar Alexander II revoking privileges accorded to Mennonites by Catherine the Great — in particular their exemption from military service. Anna had five siblings: Margarete, Peter, John, Helena and Cornelius Jr. She was married to Aron Claassen on Jan. 9, 1879 in a double ceremony at Aron's home which included Aron's sister, Tienchen to Wilhelm Andreas. Anna and Aron had nine children, two died in infancy, two others, Daniel and Catherine died young, and the remaining five, Cornelius, John J. R., Aaron, Anna and Margaret lived to adulthood. They purchased land and made their home five miles southwest of Beatrice and farmed there until retirement.
