Asahel and wife Catherine Hollett Woodward are believed to be the first white people to settle in Henry County in 1819. Asahel was born in Rockingham County, Virginia in 1791, moved to Kentucky with his family in 1802 then to Ohio. He enlisted in the War of 1812as a private in Captain Richard Sloan's Company, Adams Battalion, Ohio Militia and servied six months. After his discharge he enlisted in Captain James Rightmire's company, Russell's Battalion, Ohio Militia and served from September 6, 1814 to the close of the war, march 5, 1815. He and Catherine wre married in 1815. They were true pioneers and frontiersmen and became one of the biggest land holders in Henry County.
