Clarissa married 1st husband, Giles Sisson Case, on May 14, 1846. He was a ferryman on the Ohio River. On December 27, 1848, a total stranger came to the door & asked Giles to take him over to VA. Clarissa didn't want Giles to go but he assured her he would be O.K. & gave her a "lucky" 2 1/2 dollar gold piece. He never returned. At the end of the winter his body was found washed up on an island down river near Gallipolis.
*Info suppled by Sue Edwards, ggg-granddaughter of Clarissa McAboy Case-Oaks. Sue has the gold piece & the story was handed down to her by her great-aunt, the daughter of Blanche Chase. Sue also shares that Giles is buried in Pine Street Cemetery, Gallipolis, next to his father, Luther "Lute" Case
At the time of Giles's death Clarissa was pregnant and gave birth to their 2nd daughter, Lucy, in February, 1849; Lucy died 6 months later from the "croop". Their first daughter, Lutilla Case, was born in June, 1847.
