Strother D. Center, active in church and civic affairs in Oklahoma prior to retiring to Santa Cruz nine years ago, died Monday in a local hospital following a short illness.

Center, 81, was a native of Texas and lived for 47 years in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he was the distributor for Willard Batteries and Philco sound equipment. He was a chamber of commerce member which established the Will Rogers Air Field.

He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Cruz, and the Scottish Rite Bodies, India Temple of Shrine and Rotary, all of Oklahoma City.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Thomas Carr officiating. Inurnment will follow at IOOF Crematory. White's Mortuary, 138 Walnut Ave., is in charge of arrangements. The cremation remains are buried in the Fairview cemetery of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

OBITUARY WRITTEN BY DARGAN'S WIFE AMA LEIGH CENTER

Strother Dargan Center, 81 years, a graduate of Bliss Electric School of Washington, D.C. Upon graduation he became an assistant to the Chief Electrician of John D. Rockefeller's estate in Pocautico Hills, N. Y.

He became a traveling inspector for Exide Battery Company of Chicago covering middle and eastern United States. He acquired the franchise for Willard Storage Battery Co. for the eastern half of the state of Oklahoma for 47 years. And during the prior 10 years he also had a dealership for part of Oklahoma with the Philco Radio Television and Sound Equipment as they were placed on the market.

He retired from business in 1945. In 1946 he became auditor for the State of Oklahoma and Federal Government's Vocational Education program for Veterans of Oklahoma.

He was an active member of the chamber of commerce and served on the committee that brought the air field to Oklahoma City that later became The Will Rogers International Airport.

He was a member of the Rotary Club and had a perfect attendance until he resigned in 1945. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oklahoma City and Deacon of the church from 1917 to 1946. He was the youngest Deacon installed in the church.

He was a 50 year member of the Blue lodge, Scottish Rite, and Shrine orders of Masonery. He was a member of the Shrine Patrol, and Director of the Shrine of Oklahoma City.

He had a very tender concern about the orphan children of Korea, and sponsored five. He was very interested in missions and contributed heavily toward the cause.

His love for birds, flowers, good music (mainly opera) and poetry kept him occupied. He never had the time to do all he wanted to do.

There was a total of 9 children in the family, six sons and three daughters. I have found all of the sons, but can not locate the 3 girls. Below is the information that I have on the 3 girls:

Margaret Dargan Center (female) Born Jan 26, 1875 - Fairfield, S.C.
Hester Boyd Center (female) Born Nov 9, 1874 - Desoto Parish, LA.
Helen Howard Center (female) Born Nov 18, 1876 - Desoto Parish, LA.

I hope to be able to find these 3 family members someday!
