In the 1880 US Federal Census for Brunswic [sic], Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 43-year-old New York-born engineer James and his 30-year-old Vermont-born second wife Anna [Taft] Brown have in their household his Wisconsin-born son by his first marriage to Eleanora Fay Brown, 15-year-old Chas [sic Charles], and their Wisconsin-born children, 6-year-old Ella, 4-year-old Bertha and 2-year-old Fred. Charles, Ella and Bertha have attended school in the past year. James' parents were born in New York. Anna's parents were born in Vermont. The Browns are apparently living in a double bungalow as two families are listed for one address. The other family is that of 33-year-old filer P R Glover and his 28-year-old wife Ella.

In the 1885 Wisconsin State Census for Eau Claire Ward 3, Eau Claire, Jas [James] Brown has four white males [himself and his three sons, Charles Lee, Frederic Dill and James Harding Jr] and three white females [his wife Anna Sarah Taft Brown, and his two daughters, Ella Marian, Bertha Mower] in his household. His neighbors are the F.W. Deacon family and the Frank A Clay family.

In the 1895 Wisconsin State Census for Eau Claire Ward 3, Eau Claire, J.H. [James Harding] Brown has three white males [himself and his two of his three sons, Frederic Dill and James Harding Jr] and four white females [his wife Anna Sarah Taft Brown, and his three daughters, Ella Marian, Bertha Mower and Catharine Sophia]. His neighbors are the R. Farr family and the Dick Christenson family

The 1900 census confirms the move to Farwell St in Eau Claire, where 64-year-old New York-born engineer James, 52-year-old Vermont-born Anna S and their five Wisconsin-born children, 26-year-old Ella M, 24-year-old Bertha M, 22-year-old Fred D, 17-year-old Harding J [James Harding Jr], and 11-year-old Katheirne [Catharine] are all in the Brown household. Charles, James' son by his first marriage, has left home. James and Anna have been married 28 years

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Worcester, Worcester, Massachusetts, 48-year-old Massachusetts born Robert K and his 44-year-old Wisconsin-born wife Bertha B [Brown] Shaw are living in a house at 38 Monadneck Road, which Robert owns, but with a mortgage. He is a librarian for the Worcester Public Library. Robert and Bertha can read, write and speak English. Robert's parents were born in Massachusetts. Bertha's father was born in New York and her mother in Vermont.

On 27 Apr 1923, Robert K Shaw applies for a passport for himself and his wife, Bertha Brown Shaw, to visit England and the British Isles for "travel", not to last any longer than six months. They plan to sail on the SS Assyria on 16 Jun 1923. Robert's description is:
Age :51 years' Stature: 5 feet 7-1/2 inches, Eng.; Forehead: Medium; Eyes: Grey (blue is crossed out); Nose: Regular; Distinguishing marks -------; Mouth: Medium (Sm is crossed out); Chin: Round; Hair: Dark brown; Complexion: Medium; Face: Round.
Marcus I Young of Worcester, Massachusetts swears to Robert's identity. The attached photo is of both Robert and Bertha. His passport was approved for issue 1 May 1923

Fifty-two year old Robert and his 47-year-old wife, Bertha [Brown] Shaw sailed on the S S Melita which had come from Antwerp via South Hampton and Cherbourg in early Aug 1923. They arrived in the Port of Quebec on 10 Aug 1923. Robert was born 18 Jul 1871 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Bertha was born on 27 Dec 1875 in Porterville, Wisconsin. His passport , #278234, was issued by Washington on 12 May, 1923. Robert and Bertha's address in the United States was 38 Monadwick Rd, Worcester, Massachusetts.

Fifty-six year old Robert K and his 52-year-old wife Bertha [Brown] Shaw sailed from Cherboyrg [sic] France on 17 Jun 1928 the SS America, arriving in the Port of New York on 26 Jun 1928. Robert was born 18 Jul 1871 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Bertha was born on 27 Dec 1875 in Porterville, Wisconsin. Their address in the United States is 12 Elm Street, Worcester, Massachusetts.

In the 1930 US Federal Census for Worcester, Worcester, Massachusetts,58-year-old Massachusetts-born Robert K and his wife 54-year-old Wisconsin-born Bertha B [Brown] Shaw were married when he was 31- and she was 26-years old They are still living at 38 Monadneck Road in a house that Robert owns, worth $11,000. They own a radio. He still has his job as librarian for the Worcester Public Library as he was at work on the last regularly scheduled work day. Robert's parents were born in Massachusetts. Bertha's father was born in New York and her mother in Vermont.

Robert and Bertha were childless.

Bertha died in 1957 in Worcester, and was buried in Hope Cemetery, Worcester, Worcester, Massachusetts (Find A Grave Memorial# 36873070). Her tombstone records that she was born in 1881, but this is incorrect as she was 4-years-old on the 1880 US Federal Census.
