Julia Blumenauer Aiken died 23 June 1999 at the Friends Nursing Home in Olney, Maryland. She had been incapacitated for months after suffering progressive degradation in her health over a few years. While in this nursing home she was unable to speak understandably, to walk or to eat on her own. How much she understood was undeterminable. She obtained all her nourishment by means of feeding tubes. Her death, from pneumonia, was a release from a life that had become meaningless and purposeless to her. A memorial service was held at the Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Wheaton , at ten o'clock, 3 July 1999. Her desire had been for cremation and burial with her husband.
