Services for Elizabeth Velder were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, 1988, from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Tilden with Fr. Robert Schmitz officiating.
Organist was Eleanor Schapmann and soloist was Loretta Nykodym.
Pallbearers were Jim Rudnick, Cecil Rudnick, Jerry Scheer, Matt Parr, Joe Sherack, and Jim Black. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery at Tilden.
Elizabeth H. Velder, the daughter of Justin and Margaret(Heenan) McCarthy, was born at Clearwater, Nebraska, on December 27, 1904. She graduated from Tilden High School and taught school for several years. She was then a telephone operator in Tilden until 1942.
On August 11, 1942, she was united in marriage to Pete Velder at Tilden. The couple moved to a farm south of Battle Creek in 1947. After Pete's death in 1951, she became a housekeeper for Fr. Kaup in Battle Creek and later in Monowi and Clarks, Nebraska. In 1985, ill health forced her retirement.
Elizabeth died at the St. Joseph's Nursing Home in Norfolk during the morning of Sept. 13, 1988. She was 83 years of age and is survived by a brother, John T. McCarthy of Gilbert, Arizona, and one sister, Theresa Scheer of Norfolk.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Justin and Sandy; five sisters, Margaret Funk, Sally LaVelle, Mary Ellen McCarthy, Lucy O'Brien and Ann James, and one half-sister Kathryn McCarthy.
