Alvin Ray Ensley, 70, of Hamilton, Wash., died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at Skagit Valley Hospital, Mt. Vernon, Wash.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 26) at Lyman Cemetery.
Born April 5, 1938, in Cullowhee, he was a son of the late Alvin and Dessie Deitz Ensley. He was raised in and attended grade school in Cullowhee before his family settled in Sedro-Woolley, Wash., in the early 1950s. He was a 1956 graduate of Sedro-Woolley High School where he was on the wrestling team. He later joined the U.S. Navy and worked as an electronic technician. After his discharge, he worked for the Washington State Department of Transportation in the survey department. He was involved in building Interstate 90 over the Snoqualmie Pass. He also worked for various other engineering firms before retiring and purchasing a small ranch in Hamilton.
He enjoyed country western dancing and taught dance lessons around the Skagit Valley and as far south as Auburn, Wash. He also enjoyed trail riding on his horses and was a member of the Back Country Horsemen.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant siblings, Nannette and Willard.
Surviving are one son, Garry Ensley of Lynnwood, Wash.; one brother John "Jay" Ensley of Sedro-Woolley; three stepdaughters, Annie Nersten of Lyman, Wash., Vicki VanDyke of Sedro-Woolley, and Bobbi Gustafson of Mt. Vernon; and two grandsons.
