A veteran of the Civil War, Cornelius Cawman Craver, a resident of Montezuma, Iowa, enlisted as a private, at age 21, on August 11, 1862. He was mustered into Company C, 28th Iowa Infantry on September 22, 1862. He took part in the battles of Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek and Winchester. He was slightly wounded at Winchester on September 19, 1864. He was in the hospital during the winter of 1862-1863 and later was detailed for service at the headquarters of the corps under General Ranson during the Red River campaign. He continued as a private throughout the period of hostilities and was honorably discharged after a term of service characterized by the utmost loyalty and bravery. He was mustered out on July 31, 1865 at Savannah, Georgia.
