WILLIAMS W. WELLS, Old Canal Boatman, Dies
Durhamville, July 8 – William W. Wells, boatman on the old Erie Canal, passed away Monday night after a lingering illness. Born in the town of Oswego in 1861, the family moved to Durhamville when he was a boy.
For the better part of 30 years, Wells worked on canal boats. Ten years ago, he retired to accept a position in an Oneida manufacturing plant.
Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. LeRoy Allen and Miss Mamie Wells, at home; two sons, Francis and B. J. Wells, both of Durhamville, and five grandchildren.
NOTE: Obit had year of birth 1861, stone has 1860. AND, he shows up on 1860 US Federal Census as a child of 10/12 yrs. of age. So, I figure that puts birth in 1859.
